Recently, I have been setting clearer goals to try and accelerate my course towards the dream finish line. If you read my blog regularly, or as regularly as I post which is not much recently, you know that playing poker professionally is part of that dream. Goal setting is always a key component of successfully realizing your end game.

Some of the goals I have set myself include making sure I track all poker cash sessions, playing on a more regular schedule, and ensuring I have enough hours of play to validate potential future success. Right now, I am playing poker twice a week and have a very good hourly rate. I have set for myself a bankroll goal which I plan to have going into the World Series of Poker in June. And finally,I have been regularly studying various poker resources to improve my game. If you have a dream, you have to work hard to get there. I am taking a better and more efficient path by being more diligent about my work ethic.

This renewed commitment has allowed me to plug a few key leaks in my game and has accelerated my results from pace car to speed racer. At times my play has been spectacular to the point of not recognizing the poker player I have become. I am still getting comfortable with my new poker skin but it is sure starting to feel more comfy. That comfort demonstrates that I am that much closer smiling big and dreaming bigger.

Resign in Your Mind

QuitIf you are no longer working a 9-5 job for a larger entity, and/or are happy with your current work situation… Congratulations you are on your way to successfully fulfilling your dream. This particular blog post is not for you and you can stop reading now. For everyone else, this one IS for you.

So Resign in Your Mind is technically just a title to get your attention. But there is some truth to what I am talking about by this statement. I am not suggesting you truly resign in your mind. Instead what I am suggesting is that you take action on a future possibility, a future dream.

Most of what I have read about fulfilling your dreams, and more specifically your dreams of working for yourself in a job that you love, say you should start by working backwards. So what if you took all the right steps to replace the income from your 9-5 job and no longer required what it previously provided you (Security, Money, and a way to survive)? The last step would require writing your letter of resignation to your current boss.

So what are you waiting for? While you may not be ready to actually quit your job today and try to fulfill your dreams immediately, why not set a date and time for that wonderful day to occur sometime in the near future. There is credence to many sources which suggest you quit today rather than postponing your dreams until tomorrow. Forcing yourself to move forward is sometime the most valuable step. But if you’re like me, you are planning for a middle step. That step where you start planning and preparing for that glorious day when you can truly deliver that resignation letter.

What does writing it do if you can’t deliver it? Well a few very important things:

1. It sets your mind in the right direction towards believing it is achievable.
2. It creates a time bound parameter.
3. It’s written down.

There are many things I have hoped to achieve in life that I actually succeeded at by setting up the stage in my mind. This included working in a corporate training department, becoming a people manager, and living in San Francisco. I have since delivered upon and moved past these goals. Many of them, however, took much longer than expected since I missed two of the three important items.
So find that magical date, write that glorious letter, and start taking the physical steps and the steps in your mind necessary to move on from your 9-5 prison and onto your more important dreams.

Till next time… Smile Big and Dream Bigger!
